The German DJ duo HBz, comprised of Nils and Niklas, has taken the German music scene by storm in recent years. Their remixes and original tracks have gained immense popularity, accumulating over half a billion views on YouTube and propelling them into the top 10 most-listened-to YouTube artists in Germany. We’re thrilled to ask them some questions about their production process.

What is your favorite piece of hardware gear to work with and why?

Even though we still appreciate analog gear for its distinctive sound and tactile experience, we don’t use much hardware anymore. The evolution of digital technology has enabled us to streamline our setup, making it more versatile and efficient.

Our favorite piece of gear to work with would be our workstation, the command center of our studio, if you will. This is where all the magic happens. It runs our DAW, hosts our plugins, and is the nexus point for all our creative ideas.

The flexibility and power that a high-spec workstation provides are unparalleled. It allows us to seamlessly navigate between different projects, handle complex arrangements, and experiment with diverse sound libraries without breaking a sweat. Plus, the convenience of having everything in one place, from composing to mixing to mastering, significantly improves our workflow.

It may not be as flashy as a vintage synthesizer or a classic drum machine, but the creative possibilities it opens up are truly endless, and that’s why it’s our favorite gear to work with..

Is there a specific VST plugin that radically changed your workflow?
As for a VST plugin that radically changed our workflow, it has to be Serum by Xfer Records. Its visual and creative workflow-oriented interface makes creating and altering sounds fun instead of tedious. It also offers a high-quality sound, which is key.

Do you have a specific process when it comes to creating tracks? For instance, do you start with a beat or with a melody?

Our process of creating tracks varies, but we often find ourselves starting with a melody. Melody forms the soul of our tracks and everything else kind of naturally falls into place around it. We work on the beat, the rhythm, and the bassline to support that melody and give it context.

How do you approach space in production as it relates to delays and reverbs?

Space in production is critical. With regards to delays and reverbs, we approach it by trying to create a three-dimensional soundscape. It’s about creating a sense of depth and distance in a mix, and it can add an ethereal quality to a track when used creatively.

Which aspect of music production do you feel you excel at?

We excel at creating unique and compelling melodies. We believe that melody is the heart of any track, and we invest a lot of time and creativity in making our melodies stand out.

Your best advice to get that kick drum pounding?

For a pounding kick drum, our best advice would be to focus on EQ and compression. Cut the frequencies that don’t need to be there to leave room for the ones that do. It’s also crucial to ensure your kick drum doesn’t clash with the bass.

Out of all the productions you have made, what would be your personal favorite?
It’s hard to choose a personal favorite among all our productions, as each one has a special place in our hearts. But if we had to pick one, we’d say our track ‘Voyager’. It encapsulates our journey in the music industry, and we’re really proud of the creative process that went into it.

What is the best advice you have for other producers in the game?

The best advice we can give to other producers is to stay authentic. Trends come and go, but authenticity is what resonates with people. Don’t be afraid to experiment and make the music that you believe in.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

We’d like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all our fans. Your support and love for our music have been the driving force behind our journey. We promise to keep pushing our boundaries and delivering the music that you all love. Stay tuned for some exciting projects we have lined up!
