INTERVIEW WITH SPIKY
Collaborating with DJ Dobrel, a respected figure in the European techno scene, must have been a unique experience. What did you learn or discover about your own artistry through this collaboration, and how did his production style influence your vocal delivery or songwriting approach on these tracks?
I have always been a very opened minded person in all areas of my life. My career in the music business has been no different. I enjoy working with different talent styles and different sounds they each bring. It forces me outside of my comfort zone and always results in a great new fusion style song. Working with DJ Dobrel has been so much fun. As he has a very similar mindset and is as hard-working as I.
We both have equally enjoyed creating this Techno style project together and both have grown in our art as well.
As the founder of Diamond Distro, releasing “Sex Sounds” and “Yes Sounds” on your own label signifies a strong sense of independence. How does having this control empower your artistic choices, especially when venturing into new sonic territories like hard techno?
I founded my own record label to allow me the flexibility to release all styles of music and with all types of artists. It also allows me to have control over the administration process.
This business, unfortunately, is made up of very unethical people and companies. By doing it myself I avoid letting in those who do not a line with me and my team’s value system.
What’s a guilty pleasure song (outside of your usual genres) that you secretly love to belt out in the shower or in the car?
As a child my dad loved Frank Santra and played his music all the time. The Frank Santra song I secretly love to belt out when alone, “Come Fly with me”.
If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, just for fun, where would you go and what’s the first thing, you’d want to do there?
I would head over to the French Riviera ,Monaco, during F1 race week. Be on one of those big ass yachts parked in the bay. Watch the race from there.
“Sex Sounds” has a clean version, “Yes Sounds.” What nuances did you focus on preserving in the “Yes Sounds” version?
It was important to both DJ Dobrel and I that we did have any limitations where and who would promote and spin “Sex Sounds”.
Therefore, we decided to create a softer, cleaner version that had no limitations.
Looking beyond this release, how has exploring the harder styles of electronic music with DJ Dobrel potentially opened up new avenues or directions for your future solo work and artistic explorations? Can we expect to hear more of this harder edge from SPIKY?
With me, you never know what to expect. I would say, “Expect the unexpected at all times”. I tend to do things the SPIKY WAY!
