INTERVIEW WITH CHARISMATIC ACTOR AND PASSIONATE SINGER WILLY HOBAL

Willy Hobal, a charismatic actor and a passionate singer. Dominican born based in Switzerland, has established himself as a prominent figure in various artistic disciplines. Though he has a significant business experience in luxury hotel marketing, his true passion lies in the arts.

Currently is launching his artistic career as a showman, with a focus on creating music that not only entertain but also empowers and inspires people, particularly the lgbtq+ community.

How would you classify your music?

I classify my music as latin urban pop, a mix of latin urban rhythms with a taste of pop. With my music the goal is to celebrate love, life and the idea of being yourself and dance in your own way without being judge.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences.

Oh! Number one will always be Jennifer López, when I was a kid I used to enjoy her music and tv appearances a lot, the dance breaks, her style and the fact that she comes from a humble family like me. Britney Spears is another big influence, I love seeing her live performances on tv and her catchy songs. My other influences are Lady Gaga, Pitbull and Doja Cat.

What do you want fans to take from your music

That there is hope, a better tomorrow, my music is happy and danceable and the main idea is freedom, I want everyone who listen to my music to dance and feel free, thinking that tomorrow everything will be ok. There is so much negativity in this world and I want to bring a little splash of happiness with my Caribbean flavor.

What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most on playing live

I went to a JLO concert in the Dominican Republic, I enjoyed from beginning to end, every single minute of it. What I love about playing live is to create and develop ideas. I love to call myself a showman in process, I want to offer a show that is full of surprises, costume changes, lights, dancers, confetti, a whole celebration of our freedom. I want to offer people shows where there will be entertained, laugh, dance…. Be themselves.

Is there a song on your debut EP that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

“ON THE DANCEFLOOR” is definitely one of my big favorites. I produced this song myself in 2020, my very first song and when we were creating this song I was thinking of a heartbroken period when I went to the disco to dance my pain away and felt in love in one night with a guy, it was a beautiful experience that makes me feel like there was hope in love again.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

A lot! I have learned so much about the music industry, it is not easy to navigate, but I have learned many things, the most important being to enjoy the process, with this fast changing world is easy for artist to live in frustration and disappointments, but mental health is super important, so I have tried as much as possible to just enjoy the process and have fun!

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

Haha! I’m super to be so obsessed but JLO again. She is an artist that I look after, she have sustained her career for so long, and I would love to share with her and ask advice for my career and business. She is a multi talented artist and I would love to follow that path.

What is next for you

I will keep promoting my EP VIRGO, because I believe it should become one of my signature pieces and I love everything on it. Also, I want to create another album inspired in the Tainos (ancient habitants of Dominican Republic before the discovery of America) and celebrate that part of my culture, including the African, European and taino mix that is so characteristic of my beautiful island.
